Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC), voluntarily incorporated by urban planners across the country in 1956, is the only legally registered academic organization at state level. UPSC is devoted to organizing international and national academic activities involving urban planning, promoting planning knowledge and technologies, providing consulting service to governmental agencies at different levels, publishing planning books, academic papers and other publications, protecting the legitimate rights of urban planners, boosting professional development, granting honor and awards to distinguished individuals or organizations.
In 1992, UPSC formally registered as a non-governmental organization upon the approvals of Ministry of Construction and Ministry of Civil Affairs. It’s former Presidents include WANG Wenke, CAO Hongtao, ZHENG Xiaoxie, WU Liangyong, ZHOU Ganzhi and QIU Baoxing. The current President is in vacancy, the current Vice Presidents include: WANG Jiangguo, YIN Zhi, SHI Nan, LU Bin, WU Jiang, WU Zhiqiang, HE Xinghua, ZHANG Quan, ZHAO Wanmin, ZHAO Yanjing, ZHOU Lan, SHI Weiliang and FAN Jie.
UPSC has four working committees, i.e. organization, youth, publication and science, and nineteen academic committees, i.e. regional planning and urban economy, residential planning, landscape and environmental planning, historical and cultural city planning, small town planning, overseas planning, infrastructure and engineering planning, high-tech application, urban safety and disaster mitigation planning, urban ecological planning, urban design, urban transport planning, urban planning history and theory, urban photography, comprehensive planning, mountain area planning, planning implementation, rural planning and development, and governance and policy study. The Secretariat is responsible for daily work, which has four departments, i.e. Liaison Office, Consultant Department, City Planning Review, and China City Planning Review. The former Secretary Generals include AN Yongyu, ZHOU Ganzhi and XIA Zonggan, the current Secretary General is SHI Nan.
UPSC has wide network with various planning agencies. Its partners include World Bank, UNDP, UN-Habitat, ISOCARP etc. Domestic partners include governmental agencies at national and local level, universities, and consultative agencies.
