Shanghai tops the comprehensive economic competitiveness ranking among Chinese cities, according to the 19th edition of China Urban Competitiveness Report. The report was jointly issued by the National Academy of Economic Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the China Social Sciences Press on November 2nd, based on an evaluation study on 291 Chinese cities in terms of comprehensive competitiveness in the year of 2021. Among the top 10 are Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Beijing, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Taipei, Nanjing, Wuhan and Wuxi, with Shanghai surpassing Hong Kong and Shenzhen to be the No. 1.
Ni Pengfei, Assistant Dean of the National Academy of Economic Strategy, presided the research as principal investigator. According to the report, the comprehensive economic competitiveness, as the cornerstone of urban development, measures the strength of economic development, increment and efficiency of Chinese cities, which is the decisive force of current and short-term economic performance and the key foundation for future and long-term development. The report also measured the sub-indexes of hard investment environment, global connectivity and social harmony, with regard to which, Shanghai ranks the first in all three terms. Shanghai also ranks in the top five in aspects of local factors and economic vitality. In addition, Shanghai has been regards as one of the best cities in the ranking of sustainability, soft investment environment, innovation and environmental resilience.
