Xiakewan Science City International Scheme Collection

Xiakewan1 Science City undertakes the important responsibilities of Jiangyin, a municipality of Jiangsu Province, to implement the strategic requirements of regional collaborative innovation, accelerate its integration into the global science and innovation system and participate in the global division of science and innovation. It is an important link between Jiangyin and Taihu Bay Science & Innovation Belt. In order to realize the goal of Xiakewan Science City as "a city of wisdom and interconnection, a city of green ecology, a city of youth and fashion, and a city of future science and technology", and to lead a new mode of green development and innovative development, Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC) is entrusted by Jiangyin Natural Resources and Planning Bureau to organize the international scheme collection of strategic planning and conceptual urban design of Xiakewan Science City.


Project Location and Design Scope

Xiakewan Science City is located in the middle of Xicheng Collaborative Development Zone. It is the core area of Xicheng Collaborative Development Zone and an important part of Xicheng Ecological Green Center. It is also the start-up area of Xicheng Collaborative Development Zone (all located in Jiangyin). Xiakewan Science City is surrounded by high-quality ecological and cultural resources such as Xiakewan , Mazhen and Wenlin wetland, and Xu Xiake's former residence. Wuxi City Rail Line S1 runs through the north and south along Xiake Avenue, with superior traffic location conditions.

Xiakewan will join hands with Xicheng strategic platform to build the first island chain of Taihu Bay Science and Technology Innovation Belt, focus on the development of intelligent manufacturing economy, digital economy, culture and tourism economy, service economy, cultivate original emerging industries, and solidly promote the coordinated development of Xicheng.

Jinan Avenue links the surrounding industrial cities from the east to the west, organizes the cooperation and symbiosis of large international science platforms, and constructs the spatial development framework of "one core, two axes and three pieces" of the Science City.

As the green space connecting the Yangtze River and Taihu Lake, the scheme put forward three strategies of Lianshui, Zhiye and Yuecheng, ", which carries the whole chain and cycle development of future science and technology from strategic incubation to accelerated growth, from front-end R & D to pilot production.

One island: the intersection of the cross axes and the peninsula space surrounded by Xiakewan are the global service center island of the science city; 

Two centers: the north and South TOD hubs are the dynamic nodes of Qingyang and Mazhen; 

Four hubs: innovation acceleration hub, intelligent transformation hub, research and development application hub, future creation hub.

The design takes water as the vein to form a 5.5km2 concentrated Lake Wetland in Central Lake Bay, creating the core of multiple habitats, which is the exhibition window of Xiakewan's future habitat and cutting-edge technology. The design of the 35km greenway system in the base draws inspiration from nature, identifies five types of characteristic space, namely river, creek, bay, harbor and pond, and creates a rich and varied hydrophilic place.

Expert comments

1. The plan observes Xiakewan from the rationality of the national scientific and technological innovation pattern and the scientific and technological innovation system around Taihu Lake, and puts forward the transformation and upgrading of the compound City home. Based on the experience of international science cities, the research and analysis of different types of science cities are more comprehensive.

2. The scheme adopts the unit combination development mode, which better presents the design concepts of immersive experience space, multi inclusive innovation environment, small and refined space posture, and strengthens the characteristics of the suburban Science Park, with both elastic and distinctive spatial structure.

3. The project takes water as the vein to build the whole forest field network, which highlights the characteristics of Building Science City in the wetland environment. At the same time, it can better reflect the characteristics of the living form of Jiangnan region, which is close to water. The design of waterfront and Water Street is both inheritance and innovation.

4. Based on the local private industry and the existing industrial structure, it is reasonable to introduce talents, scientific activities and technology research and development, and take advanced manufacturing industry as the future industrial direction. According to the space requirements of enterprises in different development stages, modular design is proposed.
