On June 5th, the annual meeting of UPSC Housing and Community Planning Academic Committee was held in Beijing Tshinghua Tongheng Planning and Design Institute, with a theme of "community building and community renovation".

China’s fourteenth five-year plan clearly puts forward the Implementation of urban renovation action and the Intensification of old urban communities regeneration which proposes higher requirements for sustainable community planning, building and renovation. 

On June 5, the 2021 annual meeting of UPSC Housing and Community Planning Academic Committee focused on the theme of "community building and community renovation". Experts, scholars, government officials, business representatives and other colleagues from the fields of community building, community planning and urban renovation were invited to carry out joint discussions and in-depth exchanges to further deepen academic thinking and practical achievements.

The conference was sponsored by UPSC Housing and Community Planning Academic Committee, organized by Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd., and co-organized by the Community Building Professional Committee of Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development.

With the acceleration of China's urbanization process and the improvement of people's living standards, people's pursuit of life quality is increasing. Community building and renovation has become an important topic for people's life, the basic unit and cell of the city, as well as the "last kilometer" of urban governance.

“Housing and community are not only a living space, but also an emotional bond. Planners should awaken people's perception of ‘home’ through the design of housing, community and the whole residential function. Whether the city can become people's spiritual home or not, we must first start with housing and community. " Secretary General Shi Nan said, “housing and community are the most basic scientific fields of urban and rural planning. It is necessary to provide theoretical and academic support for national governance decision-making, and even conduct more forward-looking research.”

Bian Lanchun pointed out that the housing problem has been the core issue of social development since ancient times. Whether from the perspective of national governance or from the perspective of micro renovation, community building and multiple participation, housing and community planning is not only an internal topic of the discipline, but also a wide range of interdisciplinary social problems.

Housing and community issues are related to the long-term stability of society. "From the perspective of planners, there is also a concept of space for housing. We should think about how to balance the supply and layout, and the relationship between housing, industry and urban function." Yuan Xin stressed, "in addition to discussing the increment of housing and community, we should pay more attention to a large number of existing housing and community renovation issues. We should use urban design methods to improve the living environment, enhance the quality of urban space, and promote social equity."
