Traditional villages, also known as ancient villages, refer to the villages that were built up long time ago and should be protected in view of their historic, cultural, art, and social values. Being the most significant heritage of China’s agricultural civilization, they have rich historic information and cultural landscape. In order to promote the protection and development of traditional villages, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Ministry of Culture, and the Ministry of Finance organized the first survey of traditional villages all over China in 2012 and listed the first batch of 646 villages as China’s Traditional Village to be preserved. So far, five batches of 6,819 villages are on the list of China’s Traditional Village.
