Gender equality means that everyone, regardless of gender, enjoys the same conditions to fully realize their human rights and can equally participate in and benefit from political, economic, cultural, and social development activities. In the Chinese context, it is often expressed as “equality between men and women.” On the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995, the Chinese government solemnly declared to the international community that equality between men and women is a basic national policy to promote China’s social development. Since then, the concept of gender equality has been gradually incorporated into the legal system and public policy, leading to a significant improvement in women’s social status and rights protection. The average life expectancy of women in China is 80.88 years in 2020, which is 44.18 years higher than that in 1949.
