Being a specific type of apartment building that was popularly built in Chinese cities in the 1960s and 1970s under the circumstance of planned economy, the tube-shaped apartment building is spatially characterized by the layout of a long corridor with rooms evenly distributed on its both sides. The uniform rooms were quite small, only a dozen square meters, and were only used for individual apartment and public toilets, while the long corridor was often used as kitchen. As a result, the living quality as whole was usually low and in degradation.
