Big data, borrowing the words of Chris Snijders et al., refers to the *data sets with sizes beyond the ability of commonly used software tools to capture, curate, manage, and process data within a tolerable elapsed time.* Characteristics of big data can be summarized into5"Vs": Volume, Variety, Velocity, Veracity, and Value.
