It originally refers to the traditional architectural morphology of courtyard housing that buildings are laid out surrounding one or a series of courtyards. It is also widely used to describe the urban morphology of large-scale, self-sustained and gated communities that became popular in Chinese cities during the planned economy period based on the so-called Danweis, i.e., working units.
