A “Sponge City” refers to a city which performs like a sponge to absorb, store, leak, and purify rainwater and release it for reuse when necessary, helping to control floods and water-logging, alleviate water pollution, and facilitate ecological restoration in urban areas. The sponge city project promoted by China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development highlights the planning and construction of urban drainage and flooding control systems, as well as the improvement of piping networks for rainwater and sewage diversion.
