Age-Friendly City

2023-07-20

This concept first introduced on the World Health Assembly in 1987, which advocates for the provision of a safe and healthy working environment for the elderly. Subsequently, the exploration of building age-friendly cities has become a priority for the global community to address the issue of aging population. According to China’s Seventh National Census in 2020, 18.70% of its population was over 60 years old and 13.50% over 65 years old, making China face the biggest aging population all over the world. In 2015, Shanghai pioneered releasing the Guidelines for Building an Age-Friendly City, marking the beginning of China’s efforts for age-friendly city construction and, up to now, there are over 10 cities awarded by China’s National Development and Reform Commission for their outstanding efforts in building and improving elderly service systems towards age-friendly city.
