Animal inclusive urban design

2023-07-10 | UPSC

Animal inclusive urban design is developed from the definition of "inclusive design" in BS 7000-6 issued by the British Standards Institute. It means to explore new ways of biodiversity conservation in urban built environment from the perspective of spatial planning and design, bring biodiversity conservation into the decision-making process of urban design, find out how to meet the survival and development needs of both animals and humans, and pay attention to the possibility of building and creating new habitats in urban space, especially in high-density built environment. Among them, animals refer to urban wild animals, while pets, poultry, domestic animals, and protected animals in zoos do not belong to its scope of discussion. Animal inclusive urban design is applicable to medium and micro scale. It can be practiced based on urban design and public space design projects. The specific design carriers are mostly the combination of artificial and natural structures in the urban built environment, such as ecological wetlands, building facades, urban parks, community parks, community co built gardens, roof gardens, rain gardens, greenways, green roads, etc. Animal inclusive urban design provides an innovative path for urban biodiversity conservation.
