Cool Island Effects

2023-05-24 | UPSC

Since the 20th century, with the serious problems of global warming and urban thermal environment, the mitigation of urban heat island effect has become a hot issue with both theoretical and practical significance. To deal with this problem, global scholars put a common view to protect and create "cool island", to reduce the intensity of urban heat island and alleviate the urban heat environment. The concept of the "cool island effects" first appeared in the study of desert oases and lakes. It was found that the phenomenon of higher relative humidity and lower temperature than the surrounding Gobi Desert in summer can form a "cool island" in desert climate. Later, this concept was introduced into the study of urban climate, which refers to that all kinds of green Spaces, water bodies, wetlands and other spaces in cities will form different microclimates and bring the cooling and humidification effect to the surrounding environment, which helps to improve the self-regulation effect of cities on the urban thermal environment.
