Urban Flood Management

2023-11-29 | Science Direct

Climate change has led to a dramatic increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as torrential rain, hurricanes, and storm surges. Consequently, urban areas have become more susceptible to flooding, primarily due to factors such as high population density, impermeable surfaces, and inadequate drainage systems. Over the past few decades, a variety of sustainable structural and non-structural measures have been introduced to mitigate urban flood risks, with the latter playing a key role. Specific strategies include land use planning, flood forecasting, early warning systems, emergency response planning, and public education and awareness campaigns. Among these, flood visualization has emerged as a valuable tool. Advanced technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and digital twins have been integrated into flood risk management, aiding in the development of more effective flood control strategies.
