A view of the En'en Highway in Cameroon.
On January 25, local time in Cameroon, the En'en Highway, constructed by China Railway 20th Bureau, successfully passed its final inspection. This marks the official opening of the asphalt road that traverses the tropical rainforest.
The En'en Highway starts in Ntui Province and ends in Ncholai Province, covering road restoration work over 60 kilometers and the construction of 10 rural roads totaling 89 kilometers. Construction began in October 2021. The completion of the En'en Highway provides convenient travel for villagers in remote areas and will significantly help local agricultural products reach markets beyond the rainforest.
Shi Fei, the project manager of the En'en Highway for China Railway 20th Bureau, explained that Cameroon, located near the equator, has a tropical rainforest climate characterized by high temperatures throughout the year and prolonged rainy seasons. During construction, the team overcame the challenges posed by the rainy season by adjusting the construction schedule and optimizing plans in terms of foundation structure and road drainage design. As a result, the project was completed with high quality and efficiency.
Local truck driver Osman shared, “In the past, traveling on this road meant either being stuck on the way out or stuck on the way home. But now, with the newly paved asphalt road, I feel a real sense of convenience and speed-travel time has been cut by more than half.” Osman was even more excited about the increase in timber transport orders. “For those of us who make a living from freight transportation, this is truly great news,” he said.
During the construction of the En'en Highway, China Railway 20th Bureau provided over 800 jobs for the local community. Among the Chinese employees, more than 40 were from Shaanxi Province. Their presence introduced local and foreign workers to Shaanxi cuisine, including roujiamo (Chinese-style burger), biangbiang noodles, and zenggao (sticky rice cake), which became widely popular among foreign employees.
