Xinhua News Agency, Jakarta, November 19 (Reporter Tao Fangwei) The Indonesian parliament passed a bill on the 19th of November, formally abolishing Jakarta's status as the capital and establishing it as a special region.
"Jakarta's status is no longer the capital, but a special region," said Adies Kadir, deputy speaker of the Indonesian parliament, after the plenary session of parliament. “We have moved the capital to Nusantara.”
Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said Jakarta would undergo a transition from capital to special region status. Although Jakarta will no longer be the capital, it will remain a centre of economic and cultural activity and will retain its strategic appeal and importance in national affairs.
Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara, is located in North Penajam Paser in East Kalimantan province and is still under construction. The Indonesian government plans to start moving civil servants to the new capital in early 2025.
In order to alleviate the difficulties faced by the development of the capital and promote the balanced development of the country, the Indonesian government announced in 2019 that the administrative capital would be moved from Jakarta to a forest hinterland in East Kalimantan province. The construction of the new capital, Nusantara, officially started in mid-2022 and will be developed in five phases, with construction scheduled to be completed in 2045 and the population expected to exceed 2 million upon completion.
