Climate-Sensitive Urban Design

2023-10-18 | UPSC

The urban climate is facing unprecedented challenges due to rapid urbanization and climate change. The urban heat island phenomenon has been exacerbated by the increasing frequency, duration, and intensity of temperature extremes. It deteriorates the environmental quality and, hence, the livability of urban areas. Climate-sensitive urban design (CSUD), for example, land use planning, urban geometry design, and urban greening, emerge as solutions to combat the warming trend in urban areas. CSUD aims to mitigate intense urban heat by reducing the thermal load and enhancing air ventilation in the urban environment. Quantitative methods such as field measurements and monitoring, scale, and numerical modeling have widely been used to provide scientific evidence and inform urban planners and designers about CSUD strategies.
