A Model of Belt and Road Cooperation: Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park

The celebration of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park ("Two Countries Twin Parks" Framework) was held in Kuantan, the capital of Pahang, Malaysia.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Malaysia, the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park was held in Kuantan, the capital of Pahang, Malaysia. A model of China-Malaysia economic cooperation

The Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park is the first national-level industrial park established by China in Malaysia. It is also a major project of the Belt and Road Initiative and a demonstration base for cross-border international production capacity cooperation. The park was officially opened in 2013 and became the sister park of China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park.

Relying on the natural endowments, industrial advantages and market resources of the two countries, the China-Malaysia Twin Parks will accelerate the construction of a cross-border industrial chain supply chain value chain and lay out relevant characteristic industries. With the continuous deepening of exchanges and cooperation, the construction of the industrial system of the park has been accelerated, and it has become an innovative model of economic cooperation between the two countries.

With an annual output of 3.5 million tons, the first phase of the United Iron and Steel Project has a total investment of about US$1.4 billion and is the first project to enter the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park. The project was officially put into full production in June 2019. It is a leading full-process steel enterprise in Malaysia, driving the Malaysian steel industry to leap forward.

At the same time, the China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park, located in Guangxi, China, promotes the normalization of the export of Malaysian bird's nest to China, and builds a China-ASEAN bird's nest cross-border industrial chain that integrates the import of bird's nest, testing, standardized processing, and supply chain financial services. A modern industrial system including new materials, biomedicine, equipment manufacturing, electronic information and other industries.


Local Economic Development Booster

Walking into the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park, there are office buildings, dormitory buildings, factory buildings and warehouses lined up one after another, the continuous flow of vehicles and the busy work of the employees caught the reporter's eyes. In Kuantan Port, which is adjacent to the industrial park, since Guangxi Beibu Gulf International Port Group became a shareholder, two 150,000-ton deep-water terminals have been built in the new deep-water port area, and the throughput capacity of the port has been greatly improved.

Now the infrastructure construction of the industrial park is in full swing, and new achievements have been made in project investment promotion. Lu Yong, executive deputy general manager of Beibei Port Holdings (Malaysia) Co., Ltd., the operator of the industrial park, said that about 10 square kilometers of the 12 square kilometers of the industrial park have been developed, and a total of 12 projects have been signed, with an agreed investment of over 46 billion yuan. The output value exceeds 60 billion yuan.

Wang Rosdie, Minister of State of Pahang State, Malaysia, told Xinhua News Agency that the development of the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park and Kuantan Port has promoted trade and investment activities between the two countries, driven the economic development of Pahang, and provided local professionals and skilled workers with More job opportunities.

Huazhila, a Malaysian girl who speaks fluent Chinese, is one of them. She joined the United Steel (Malaysia) Group Company in May 2018 and is currently in charge of environmental safety. She told reporters that nearly five years of work experience has given her a lot of professional skills.


Re-upgrading of international production capacity cooperation

On April 7, 2023, the upgrade and expansion of the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park and the centralized commencement ceremony for major projects were held. Li Yanqiang, chairman of Guangxi Beibu Gulf International Port Group, introduced that the future industrial park will build a multi-zone development model, focusing on new materials, new energy vehicles and power batteries, electronics, equipment manufacturing and other fields. The interactive development of the industrial park builds a cross-border industrial chain, supply chain and financial chain.

With the turning of the rudder and the sound of the flute, the Kuantan Port-Beibu Gulf Port-China Sichuan-Chongqing multimodal transport route was officially opened, marking the opening of the sea-rail combined transport between the East Coast Special Economic Zone of Malaysia, the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone of China, and the western region of China. In the future, Malaysian goods will board the ship from Kuantan Port and arrive at Beibu Gulf Port. They can be quickly distributed to more than 10 provinces and cities in the central and western regions of China through the Western Land-Sea New Corridor train.

The CEO of East Coast Special Economic Zone Development Council of Malaysia, Baid Zawi, said that the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park has become one of the most successful industrial parks in the East Coast Special Economic Zone of Malaysia, and the upgrading and expansion of the industrial park and the construction of new projects will further promote the flow of goods and trade development along the Belt and Road.

With the operation of new projects in the park, the two parks of the two countries will further enhance the level of industrial chain cooperation and promote cross-border trade and investment between Malaysia and China. Bad Zavi said.
